West Surrey and South Middlesex: a requested name change
Councillors backed a new name, but the official sources checked still distinguish the request from approval.

The council’s request
On 30 July, shadow councillors backed a motion requesting the name West Surrey and South Middlesex Council. The official hub explains that the proposal recognises Spelthorne’s historic Middlesex identity.
What government has confirmed
A ministerial answer on 4 September said the request to amend the Structural Changes Order was being considered. That answer does not confirm approval or a date when a new legal name takes effect.
How this site will describe it
We will use West Surrey for the authority while reporting the longer name as a proposal. If a formal change is confirmed, the record should retain both names so residents can connect earlier reports with later decisions.
A name-change story does not by itself establish a change to council boundaries, the allocation of debt or service responsibilities. Those questions require their own decisions and evidence.
